Compassionate therapy for couples and anxiety in Portland, OR

EFT Specialist 15+ Years Experience Portland, Oregon

About Dr. Cox

For over 15 years, I've had the privilege of walking alongside individuals and couples as they navigate the complexities of relationships and anxiety. As an Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) specialist, I believe that our deepest wounds often occur in relationships—and it's in relationships where the most profound healing happens.

I'm based here in Portland, where the natural beauty of the Pacific Northwest reminds us daily of the power of growth and renewal. My practice reflects that same organic approach: grounded in evidence-based methods, rooted in compassion, and always focused on your unique path forward.

Whether you're struggling with anxiety that feels overwhelming, or you're in a relationship that's lost its way, I'm here to help you find solid ground again.

How I Can Help

I specialize in helping people reconnect—with themselves, with their partners, and with a sense of calm and safety.

Couples Therapy

Relationships go through seasons. When you're stuck in painful patterns—constant conflict, emotional distance, or feeling like roommates—it's hard to remember what brought you together. Using Emotionally Focused Therapy, we'll identify the cycles keeping you apart and help you rebuild secure connection. You'll learn to express needs, hear each other deeply, and create lasting change.

Anxiety Treatment

Anxiety can feel like a constant companion you never asked for—racing thoughts, physical tension, worries that won't quiet down. Together, we'll understand what's driving your anxiety and develop practical tools to manage it. You'll learn to recognize triggers, calm your nervous system, and build confidence in facing what feels overwhelming.

Relationship Repair & Deepening

Maybe you're not in crisis, but something feels off. The connection isn't as strong as it used to be, or you want to deepen intimacy before small issues become big ones. I work with couples at all stages—whether you're healing from betrayal, navigating life transitions, or simply wanting to strengthen your bond.

My Approach: Emotionally Focused Therapy

Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) is one of the most researched and effective approaches for couples therapy. It's built on a simple but powerful truth: we're wired for connection, and when that connection feels threatened, we react in ways that often push our partners further away.

In Our Work Together

  1. Identify the cycle – Understand the patterns that keep you stuck
  2. Access deeper emotions – Move beyond surface arguments to what's really happening underneath
  3. Restructure interactions – Create new ways of reaching for each other that build safety and closeness
  4. Consolidate change – Practice and strengthen these new patterns until they become natural

EFT isn't about teaching communication skills or assigning blame. It's about helping you both feel safe enough to be vulnerable, to express what you truly need, and to respond to each other with compassion.

Common Questions

How do I know if couples therapy is right for us?

If you're feeling disconnected, arguing about the same things repeatedly, or wondering if your relationship can improve, therapy can help. You don't need to be in crisis to benefit—many couples come to strengthen what's already working or prevent small issues from growing.

What if my partner isn't sure about therapy?

That's completely normal. One partner is often more ready than the other. I'm happy to meet with you individually first, or we can schedule a consultation where you both can ask questions and get a feel for whether this is right for you.

How long does therapy take?

Every situation is unique. Some couples see significant shifts in 8-12 sessions, while others benefit from longer-term work. For anxiety, many clients notice improvement within the first few months. We'll regularly check in about progress and adjust as needed.

Do you offer in-person and virtual sessions?

Yes. I offer both in-person sessions at my Portland office and secure video sessions for those who prefer meeting remotely or have scheduling constraints.

What about insurance?

I'm an in-network provider with several major insurance plans. I can also provide superbills for out-of-network reimbursement. Contact me to discuss your specific coverage.
